Factors affecting older adults walkability in Brazilian urban areas: a multilevel approach

Abstract

Ensuring elderly´s social participation through the access to urban activities plays a
crucial role in promoting healthier aging, especially in a context of rapidly increase of this population segment. This paper aims to identify and analyze the walking patterns of individuals older than 50 years old, as well as its variation across regions and cities into different populational stratus in Brazil. Mixed and non-mixed zero-inflated negative binomial regressions were estimated using the ELSI-Brazil database to identify the
existence of heterogeneities in the national context, and analyze factors which affect the choice for walking, as well as walking intensity for those who walk. Results highlight the lack of mobility capability as the main factor preventing walking, while public safety, sidewalk quality, and the risk of crossing streets decrease the weekly walking time for older adults.
