Abstract

Pedestrians, as vulnerable road users, still are a significant portion of traffic fatalities, and the crossing is the most critical moment in their journey due to interaction with other road users. This research aims to evaluate the frequency and severity of pedestrian-vehicle interactions in traffic lights, focusing on the individual attributes of pedestrians and the geometric characteristics of the road. A characterization of the interactions and exploratory analysis of the variables that can influence the frequency and severity of these events were made. Three signalized crosswalks were analyzed in the city of Fortaleza, and the interactions were evaluated from the observation of traffic videos and a semi-automatic analysis, focusing on the Post-Encroachment Time (PET), which measures the difference between road users' times in the conflict area. It was possible to identify that 57% of the interactions are of mild severity, 30% are moderate and 13% are serious conflicts. In addition, factors such as gender, grouping, the moment of arrival of the pedestrian at the crossing, the vehicle involved and the type of interaction, can significantly influence the occurrence of the most critical events.
